WONDERS OF SURGERY
Two important steps in medical science are reported from Baltimore (United States), says the Daily Express. German scientists, it is stated, are planning to use an artificial kidney invented by Dr John J. Abel, of teh John Hopkins Medical School, to save lives in cases of corrosive poisoning and other maladies where death is the consequence of overworking the kidneys. The false kidney is a tube of glass which can be attached to the arm or some other part of the body. It is connected with an artery on one side, and a vein on the other, so that the circulation of the * blood is not impeded. The impurities are filtered by means of the artificial kidney, and are drawn from it while the real kidneys rest.
The second step is a new water cure for serious burns, which has met with remarkable success. A 38-year-old man, it is stated, has been restored to health although two-thirds of his body were covered with burns. He was kept in a bath tub filled with water for six days and nights. The water, which was constantly changed, was greedily absorbed by his inflamed body, and the subsequent poisoning of the body was counteracted. Great quantities of water were given to the man to arink.
