ENLIGHTENED DISTILLER
THE LATE, SIR PETER MACKIE,
Sir Peter Jeffrey Mackie, who was the head of the “White Horse” Distillery—a name adopted because his forbears used to occupy the famous Edinburgh inn of that name—had been ailing for a long time and his death a few weeks ago was not unexpected. Though he was a distiller by occupation, Sir Peter had many other interests. He was a keen politician and churchman, a generous patron of athletic sports, the sole supporter of an Ethnological expedition which went to Central Africa some years ago, and possessor of a purse that was always wide open to any good object. He attained a quite unexpected success as an author. When he became able to do, he compiled, mainly for his own amusement, a “Keeper’s Book” full of information and advice on shooting, angling, and kindred pastimes. It was found so useful that it has already passed through 15 editions and is to be found in practically every >ooi}ntrj{-house ! aind; gamekeeper’s cottage. I doubt if all Sir Peter’s business success gave him half as much pleasure as the demand for his book. The death of his .only son in the war was a tragic blow .to him, and he was never quite the same man afterwards.
