A GOOD HATER

‘YELLOW PRESS’ PROPRIETOR.

William Randolph Hearst. proprietor of the Hears' chain of American Yellow press papers, hates Britain and anything British with a hatred that passes all understanding. During the wai his concerted attacks on Britain became so venemous and misleading that the importation of his papers into Britain was prohibited. This only added fuel to the flames of his hatred, and carried him to such lengths that the power and influence of, his papers suffered a good deal as the result, of hi- insane bias. Nevertheless, Britain characteristically forgave him and removed the proscription on his papers and restored all privileges to his correspondents. Leading Englishmen held out the olive branch to him by contributing articles to his papers, but. even then Hearst would not allow his hatred to be appeased. Britain was prominent in framing the Peace Treaty; that was all the justification he needed for violently opposing it. Britain actively supported the League of Nations; that was quite enough for him; he denounced it and ‘hypocritical* Britain too. Britain tried to effect a settlement of Irish affairs; Hearst did his utmost to thwart it.

The latest variation of his song of hate appears in an article which was syndicated through the Hearst press at the end of September. The article deals with the teaching of history in American schools, and the following extract indicates its tenor: “The sycophantic subserviency of British scholastic influences, which has caused many recent American histories to be mere vehicles for British Imperialistic propaganda, is freshly manifested in a new book, “Revolutionary New England,” by J. Truslpw Adams. Many American public lidraries, awakened by the Hearst exposures, have removed from their shelves books which were defaming our patriot fathers, misrepresenting our ideals as a people, and distorting our annals, in the interest of Anglo-American imperialism. The people want .only truthful, authenticated, and patriotic teachings that cultivate sound American citizenship, and not foreign propaganda fabrications designed to destroy our national spirit and solidarity.”

This is how Hearst tries to poison and doubtless to a considerable extent succeeds in poisoning the minds of his countless American readers, and it all goes to show how basely a prominent man may prostitute his great gifts and power. One need not wonder that the gifted American writer, Owen Wister complained that most of his countrymen had a strong and unreasonable anti-British complex. It is Hiearst’s ambition to do all in his power to perpetuate it.
