The clerk was f instructed to write the Hume Pipe Co. stating that the Board would endeavour to make payments on accoun't of contracts as soon as finance permits. The -tender of Messrs 1 J. Burns and Son for the supply of, reticulating pipes was accepted,, the engineer having agreed to same. It was resolved that as the Board was responsible for all expenditure the librarian be instructed to hand all funds in hand and future subscriptions to the town clerk quarterly. Also that for the future•the Board would sanction the expenditure for, looks, and that list's of books proposed to be obtained be submitted to the town clerk. After discussion "of the straying cattle nuisance it,was resolved that the surfaceman be- instructed to take the names of all owners of stock found straying bn the road, with a view to the Board taking action.

Cr R. Green was appointed deputy chairman of -fhe Hall Committee, and Cr Bell deputy chairman of the Works Committee.

It was pointed out that sand, etc., was being carted away from the esplanade frontage, and it was resolved to ask Mr R. Morton to keep the gate near his property locked. It, was . further resolved that the Board insist that frontages along all metalled streets be kept clean and free ,of weeds, etc. Cr. Message drew attention to the disrepair of the main street, where there were many pot holes appearing. It was decided to have the roadway properly mended without delay, Cr Bell 'to' supervise same.

FARMERS’ UNION. The monthly meeting of the Otorohanga Farmers’ Union was held yesterday. Present, Messrs E. H. Oudaille (chairman), B. Budden, T. J. Rogers and W. Bluck. The chairman referred to the accident to Mr A. Closey, when he was tossed by a bull. He had had a very narrow escape and he congratulated Mr Closey on his recovery from what might have meant .fatal injuries. The chairman also congratulated Mr B. Budden on his elevation to the Bench of Justices. Both gentlemen expressed their thanks. The chairman reported that he and Mr Budden had waited on the County Council re provision of wire netting for rabbits, but he was afraid nothing definite had been arrived at. The chairman mentioned the matter of County rates and pointed out that farmers could get a rebate of 5 per cent on their general rate if paid within the specified time. The balance of the rates could be left to the 31st March. Of course it was known that the County gets a subsidy on their general rates collected. The Department of Agriculture wrote stating that the matter of noxious " growth (blackberry) on the Taihaia soldiers’ settlement would be gone into.—Received. It 1 was resolved, on the motion of Mr Budden, seconded by Mr Bluck, that the secretary write to Mr W. A. Pjtrter (organiser for Ithe Waikato sub-provincial) stating that the Union would be pleased to have him address a meeting of farmers on the subject of top-dressing, the meeting to be arranged for some time in February.

TOKANUI. A correspondent writes: I am informed that the Hume Pipe Co. have the contract for three miles of 6in concrete water main to supply the Tokanui Mental Hospital. This line will intercept the Te Awamutu main somewhere near the overhead railway and convey the water for some distance alongside the railway line, finally crossing the level country direct to the institution, and the farmers en route will be able, if they wish, to receive supplies of fresh water for dairying purposes. This will be a great improvement and do away with the necessity of relying upon windmills.

There is a great deal of building activity in and around the hospital. Messrs Christie and Son have just" completed the administration block—a fine building providing ample office accommodation with suitable living quarters for the clerks. The storerooms are equipped with deep shelving and cupboards, and there is a strong-room* for the storage of documents.

Messrs Closey Bros are progressing with the female admission block, and part of this structure is now ready to receive the roof. When completed this addition will relieve the congestion, besides adding another artistic and permanent building to the rapidly expanding establishment. The gardens and grounds are a riot of colour just now, everything looking at its best. Roses, annuals and flowering shrubs all vie with one another to attract attention. One might travel much further and see a good deal less natural beauty than is exhibited in the grounds here. The tennis court is always in full use and when the other two courts are finished it will be quite a privilege to be a neighbouring resident of Tokanui.

The Town Board has received the certificate of title to the Island, which is to be used as a recreation reserve.

This should settlb the question of compensation claims by any one of the erstwhile Native owners, and arouse the necessary enthusiasm of the sports clubs towards raising funds for the development of :the, ground into an up-to-date sports reserve. Providing the present machine is sold the Town Board has decided to ght a new picture projector (Simplex). This is good news and the time' can be looked forward to when the Town Hall pictures will have returned to their pristine excellence. Mr A. Closey, of Pirongia Road, had a very nartow escape from death through being attacked by a bull. The animal is a Jersey and has been made almost a pet of, but on Wednesday, when called, made a rush at its owner, charging him in the stomach and knocking him senseless. The animal charged several times and, though hornless, tossed its victim in the air twice. • Friends coming to the rescue the animal was driven off and Mr Closey having regained consciousness was able to get to the house, where he was confined for a couple of days. The following are the officers of the Otorohanga Sports Club elected at the annual general meeting: Patrons, Messrs J. C. Rolleston, M.P.. J. Ormsby and J. Fletcher; surgeon, Dr Nicholson; president, Mr J. A. Ormsby; vice-presidents, Messrs S. J. Sanson, J. Budge, T. J. Casey and W. Hi. Clarke; stewards, chops, Mr E. Levien, athle/ac, Mr J. McCready, horse, Mr O. Dalziel; general committee, Messrs R. R. Morton, M. Howley, T. McCready, A. G. England, C. Zainey, G. Eassey, N. Smith, D. O’Donoghue, P. F. Skinner and H. Maxwell, with the officers ex-officio. The schedule of classes for the Otorohanga A. and P. show, to be held on February 12, is issued and has been distributed, but anyone wishing for a copy can obtain one by applying to the secretary. The Otewa Sports Club held a general meeting last evening at the Otewa Public Hall, when arrangements were put in training for the annual sports meeting on-New Year’s Day. r The Otorohanga County Council, in .consonance with a resolution passed at last meeting, have purchased a 22 h.p. Fordson tractor for use on the County roads. ' Mr P. Dowd writes as follows: With regard to my letter which you kindly published in your issue of November 15th, there has been a printer’s error. The letter should have read as follows: “To begin with, I will point out. that up to last February 12 months ago the Otorohanga school assembled at 9.30 a.m., and to-day it assembles at 8.55, and the schoolmaster has informed the children that he intends taking them in at 8.45 a.m.” The mistakes that have been made are that you stated last February instead of last February 12 months ago. Also the assembly time you state was .9 o’clock and should be 9.30 as stated above. The Anglican summer fair, which will be held in the Town Hall on Friday next, promises to be a great success. This will be because of the enthusiastic work on the part of a very strong ladies’ committee. There will bq a special display of summer flowers, pot plants, etc., besides children’s classes in flowers and needlework. A Christmas tree and strawberries and cream will be particular attractions, and there is to be a! Punch and Judy show.
