THE MAKING OF A LADY
You can pick her out in an hotel or boarding-house because she never complains of the food, no matter how bad it is. And she is probably used to much better fare, though she’d never say so.
She neither bullies nor grovels, but she gets what she wants done. She is always polite, and keeps a friendly aloofness. She never asks impertinent questions as to how much things cost. She doesn’t tell you her life history the first, time you meet her. And she doesn’t flatter you absurdly to your face, though there are quiet words of approval when she knows you well. She always nice, but her clothes are never extreme, and shs does not err on the side of overdressing. As ai hostess she does not wittingly outshine her guests. She is slow to knock down the barriers, and it takes her a good time to get to the Christian name stage with her friends. Bhe may discreetly put a man next to the lady of his heart, but she does not embarrass either o? them by silly allusions or awkward questions. She doesn’t pretend to be better than she is, and she never minds admitting that lack of money is the reason why she doesn’t do some of the things she’d like to, though at the same time she does not parade her poverty.— Woman’s Weekly.
