RAILWAY FREIGHTS
MOKE SEDUCTIONS WANTED
REMOVAL OF SPECIAL. IMPOSTS
On Wednesday and Thursday next, November 19th and 20th, the annual conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce will be held in Wanganui. Among the remits to be discussed is one referring to railway freights. The remit reads: "That the Associated Chambers of Commerce urge on the Minister of Railways and on the Government the advisability of abandoning the uniform schedule of freights and charges at present applying to all sections of the New Zealand Railways, and of adopting a more elastic and commercial tariff which would have as its object the adaptation of rates in each and every section of the railways to the peculiar and individual competitive economic conditions of each section." "Whereas New Zealand towns other than seaport cities are penalised by the imposition of additional freight rate upon goods transported to them by rail from a port of entry and in effect thus have to pay an extra duty, the Conference is of opinion that all penalties on imported goods should be included in the import duty and not by way of differentiation in railway rates."
It must be noted, however, that the Department is already on the move in connection with this matter, and reductions in freight on spirits, etc., wool, and other articles, have already been made.
