KAWHIA MEDICAL SERVICE
APPOINTMENT OF DOCTOR.
Dr. Cashmore, formerly medical officer under appointment to the Waikato Hospitl Board, and Kawhia Medical Association in the Kawhia district, has resigned. At the request of the Raglan Medical Association, he was appointed by the Board on Thursday medical officer of the Raglan district, vice Dr. Sanders, who intimated his desire to resign. The resignation necessitated the appointment of another medical officer for Kawhia. Mr Dent (Kawhia) suggested that instead of the old arrangement, whereby the doctor was paid £SOO per annum, made up of £l4O from the Medical Association, £142 from the Board, and a subsidy of 24s in the £ from the Government, the doctor being allowed to charge attendance fees, that a straight out salary of £7OO per annum should be paid and that the residents of the district should be given free medical service. The Association was willing to pay £225, and they asked the Board to contribute £2OO. This, with the Government subsidy, would bring-the salary up to the requisite £7OO. It was decided to ask the Department if it was agreeable to subsidise such a proposal, and if so, the matter of calling for applications for the position was left in the hands of the Medical Superintendent and the Board secretary. Mr Dent informed the Board that during the past two and a half years the people of Kawhia district had forwarded £l9l in voluntary contributions to the Waikato Hospital, which, with the Government subsidy, meant a direct advantage to the Board of £407.
