The Waipa Post goes to press on Saturday at 10.30 a.m., and we would ask advertisers to kindly note this fact.

The local retailers have arranged to close their premises on Saturday from 12 noon until 5 p.m., and then they will reopen for an hour. Constable P. J. Doyle, wf Te Awamutu, who was despatched to Sydney ten days ago to bring back an important witness in a CoUrt case at Hamilton, returned by the Makura on Tuesday.

Fourteen bankruptcies were notified in last week's issue of the New Zealand Gazette. Nine of them, involving 11 persons, were in the North Island.

Cows have peculiar methods of committing suicide. It is related from Makomako that a. cow there licked the paint from the Mangahao transmission lines passing through the owner's paddock. A Maori who wants to dispose of some of his surplus stock before Christmas writes to a local butcher as follows (relates the Wanganui Herald) : "I spect you want to buy some bull-stag and also pig. It is a good beef for a tin of meat and also good pig for a bacon,— Trusting me, your, etc."

Some young farmers' in this district know how to get the best use out of their motor cycles (remarks the Wanganui Herald). An example of this was in evidence at a local mart on a recent morning, when a young farmer arrived with four sturdy porkers on his motor cycle. Instead of the sidecar, he had a large box, and in this the- porkers were securely nailed down. A notice, straight to the point, was seen amongst the exhibits at the Wanganui Amateur . Radio Club's exhibition on Thursday evening (says the Wanganui Herald). It was worded "Hands off! The boys have lent their gear for exhibition and don't want it mauled. Eyes only on." Another sign warned "Keep your hands off. Put them in your pockets. Wireless gear is delicate, and the owners are fussy about their sets."

"Constant Reader" sends from Feilding the following skit upon the Woodvil'le results:— "€autain Sarto left Sling Camp at the sound of the Bugle Note to join the Imperial Spark with Admiral Codrington and his friend Birkie in Quest of an Island named Mangawhero, where he was received with great Civility and met his friend Lady Isinglass, who informed him of the King's Folly with a native called Ki'lcoo, which ended in a Royal Divorce. Time is Fleeting. Happy Days for Christmas." He is apparently a Merry Imp. Section 23 of the Main Highways Act provides that where a street in a Borough forms a part or continuation of a main highway, the Board may subsidise the Borough finances to.the extent of so much per mile as for an 18 foot road. The various constituent Counties have been requested to take tallies of vehicular traffic on their roads at certain points. This will be undertaken as early as possible. Other information which has to be supplied by the local bodies includes the length of every stretch of road, character of formation and material and cost per mile, description, measurements and condition of all bridges and culverts.

The totalisator investments at the Taumarunui races yesterday aggregated £13,824. Yesterday there were very light showers of rain in parts of this district, but this morning the sky is clear and a downpour seems unlikely. A heavy fall of rain for several hours would perhaps not be welcomed by those farmers engaged just now in haymaking, but others would very much appreciate it, as pastures are showing signs of the hot dry spell. A meeting of ratepayers of Pukeatua was held at Mr Bulmer's residence to consider the proposed road deviation from Mr Healy's to Arapuni and also of the existing route. Messrs Bulmer, Walker and McGechie were appointed a committee to obtain information as to comparative cost of the present and proposed routes. The magazine of the Te Awamu u District High School that has been in preparation of late is expected to leave the printer's hands to-morrow, and will be obtainable at the school. The booklet is one of sixteen pages, attractively printed, and * contains much reading matter of real interest to past and present pupils, their parents, and all interested in the school and education generally. When the circular of the Radium (Radiation) Appeal reached the Stratford Borough Council that body replied to the effect that, owing to the number of calls upon its citizens, it could not see its way to place the Appeal before them. The Radium (Radiation) Appeal Committee has replied through its secretary, informing the Stratford Borough Council that it is the only body which, so far, has "refused to take up this most deserving appeal. . . Residents in your district are as liable to this disease as residents of other districts, and provision should be made for them to receive a chance of life, or at least relief from their suffering. My committee appeals to you to reconsider your decision and lend your help ..nd influence to obtain the sum required."
