OTOROHANGA COUNTY.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following is the Engineer's report of work done last month: — Te Rau-a-Moa Riding.—-The usual maintenance and lepair work has been carried out in this Riding. The work done has been chiefly the upkeep of the Pirongia-Kawhia road, which is now in very fair repair. Wharepapa Riding.—Messrs Morton and Crowley completed their metalling on the Te Kawa-Ngaroma road near Wharepuhunga since last meeting and made a very good job of it. There is now practically a complete metalled road for a distance of two miles beyond Wharepuhunga. At the other end of this road, near Ngaroma, Messrs, Disher and Petersen are getting on well with their metalling contract. They have completed a distance of 149 chains, leaving a distance of 40 chains yet to be done. On the Ngahape road, Mr McLean has completed about 70 chains of his metalling contract and will finish at an early date. Metalling with Otorohan'ga shingle is again in progress on the Otorohanga-Kihikihi road and it is hoped to complete this summer with the approval of the Public Works Department the unmetalled gap between the old Waitomo metalling and that carried out by the Wharepapa Road Board, a distance of about one mile.

Mangaorongo Riding.—The Public Works Department has issued the necessary authorities for completing the metalling of the Waipa River road, from Otorohanga to McLuckie's corner. Two contracts are under way and further contracts will be let as soon as the loan funds come to hand. Authority has also been received for forming a distance of two miles on Lurman's road, but this work is likewise held up pending the receipt of loan money. On the Oto-rohanga-Kihikihi road metal for repair purposes has been carried out and spread where necessary.

Waipa Riding.—Specification for metalling a distance of 11 miles on the Tahaia Soldier Settlement road have been forwarded to the Public Works Department for approval and the issue of the necessary authority. No 'loan, however, has yet been raised for this work. Maintenance and repair work in this Riding has been carried out where necessary and the roads generally are in very fair order. I have not yet been able to go into the matter of metalling Barber's road, but expect to do so in the course of a few days. Honikiwi Riding.—Metal repairs on the Honikiwi road, between Otorohanga and the Te Raumauku junction have been carried out. The Foreman having completed urgent work on the Waipa River road, will now bring the tractor and grader in commission on necessary work in this Riding. , Kio Kio Drainage Contract.—Mr Gaston has completed his contract for cleaning out and deepening drains and made a very fair job of the work. Tt is essential that the ratepayers in this drainage area should come to some arrangement among themselves to keep the drains clean now that a start has been given.
