CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
MONTHLY MEETING. GENERAL BUSINESS. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce was held in the Borough Coun-i, cil Chambers on Tuesday evening, the/, president (Mr S. Clark) The members present included Messrs R. A. Coyne, C. G. Downes, J. F. Brooks, D. Bockett, G. 0. Jourdain and the secretary (Mr A. G. Warburton.
Mr J. Oliphant was elected a member of the Chamber. The chairman stated that the subcommittee set up at last meeting to prepare data for a booklet, embracing the attractions of Te Awamutu and district had not yet met, as it was considered desirable to defer the matter until after the holidays. It was mentioned that there are several newcomers to the town who would make admirable members of the Chamber, and it was hoped that they would join and become active members. United action would do much to advance the town and district.
The action of the secretary in handing from the Public Works Department re the Department's requirements in respect to the standard railway to Arapuni to the Te Awamutu-Putaruru Railway Board, was approved, it being explained that the Board's engineer, Mr J. D. Holmes ,had beea. asked to compare it with his data and report as soon as convenient. The secretary reported the outcome of the recent deputation to the Hon. J. G. Coates re improved access to Arapuni (already published). A poster and booklet, drawing attention to the tourist attractions of the Dominion, was received from the Railways Department.—lt was decided to congratulate the Department on its enterprise in bringing before the travelling public in, attractive form the beauties of New Zealand. The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce wrote re the proposed tour of the Waikato and Thames Valley by Auckland business people, and asked if the Te Awamutu Chamber would undertake to arrange transport for the party from Te Awamutu to Cambridge. The idea of the tour was to show the Aucklanders the immense resources of these districts. It was mentioned that the draft itinerary provided for the party, numbering about fifty persons, only staying about an hour in Te Awamutu. A member suggested that the Chamber organise a route march to Cambridge! The secretary was instructed to write for further details.
On the motion of the president and Mr Coyne, it was decided to heartily congratulate the Mayor and Borough Council on the success of the recent streets improvement loan proposals, as it was considered a distinct forward step in the affairs ,of Te Awamutu, J. ',:;;• •.' =: ■ ■. \j -■•'■■ ; '
