HOLLAND'S JUBILEE SHOW
N.Z. JUDGE OF PRUSSIANS. AN HONOUR FOR NEW ZEALAND. Although no announcement has previously been made of the fact, an invitation was extended to Mr W. D. Hunt, president of the New Zealand Friesian Association, to judge Friesians at the jubilee show of the Friesian Association in Holland. The fame of Mr Hunt's Bainfield Friesians has spread °into the Northern Hemisphere, and the officials of the parent society in Holland have carefully followed the progress of his herd. Although in the past many notable performances have been credited to the Bainfield herd, the past season's results quite eclipsed any previous records made. At Bainfield itself two young cows have respectively produced 23,7581 b of milk with 878.611 b of butter fat, and 21,7481 bof milk with 810.111 b of butterfat. and two heifers have produced 20,917.5'1b of milk with 728.131 b of butterfat, and 20,146.31 b of milk with 712.101 b of butterfat. In addition to this, five two-year-old heifers by the one sire have averaged approximately 6001 b of butterfat, although one of these heifers unfortunately died when she had produced 526.871 b of butterfat in nine months The average test of these heifers was 4.1 per cent, of butterfat, an unusually high one. It must be taken as a great compliment to the Dominion that one of its breeders should be asked to accept such a post as that which was offered to Mr Hunt. One can hardly conceive the conservative English socie- ( ties calling upon a Dominion breeder to officiate at one of the English shows, yet in some respects we have produced stock, notably amongst our dual purpose sheep breeds and our dairy cattle, which are quite superior to the English productions where carcase sheep and dual purpose cattle have been the principal aim of the breeders. Mention of this variation between the types of animals aimed at in the Dominion brings into prominence the necessity for the exercise of extreme care in the selection of the judges who are to be called upon to officiate at the first New Zealanad Royal: Show. Th« selectors will, have a most difficult task to perform if the Royal Show is really to fulfil its purpose, which in the first place must be to take every safeguard which will ensure the best animals being decorated with the championship ribbons.
