WATER SUPPLY.

SUBURBS WANT IMPROVEMENT. Quite a considerable discussion arose- at last night's meeting of the Borough Council following upon the foreman's report being presented. The clause, "Through a misunderstanding some water-pipes were carted on to the Hairini Road, but these will be carted back to where wanted with our own teams; they have arrived in good condition," caused Cr Montefiore to ask what was proposed. He had no recollection of any earlier decision not to carry out the previous intention to provide larger water-pipes for Hairini Road. At times there had been casual mention of giving preference to another street, but it had never been brought before the Council that the Kairini Road service was to be discontinued. It was noticeable that the water-pipes had actually been carted to this thoroughfare. Why the desire now to revert, from the earlier, intention? The ratepayers there had been promised improved service,, and it was necessary; they had paid upward of £IOOO to provide the service. , ' ;

Cr Spinley explained that there was a proposal from the ratepayers there, in common with others in the locality, to secede from the borough and be incorporated in the Waipa county administration.

Cr McGechie said it would be preferable to extend and improve the services in other parts of the borough where there was no proposal to secede.

It was mentioned that though there was a water service along Hairini Road the sizes of the pipe lines varied, down to about half-inch diameter, and thus the supply was only what would pass through the smallest pipe. Cr North suggested that some larger pipes being removed from other streets might well be made available for use on Hairini Road, and put in in place of the short lengths of pipe in that street. Cr McGechie said he was surprised that so much time had been taken up in discussing the matter. Pakura Street was entitled to a better water service, and it was honestly entitled to preference over Hairini Road. He moved that the Pakura Street improvement be proceeded with. Residents there were entitled to protection from fire.

Cr Spinley seconded. Cr Montefiore moved as an amendment that the pipes now in Hairini Road be not removed, but that they be put in, as decided upon at a meeting in May last. There being no seconder, the amendment lapsed. It was suggested that all lengtns of pipe in Hairini Road of less diameter than 11 inches be replaced as soon as pipes from other streets are available. The motion was then put and carried.

Cr Montefiore wanted some promise that 4-inch pipes would be provided for Hairini Road as soon as funds from the water supply department's revenue were available.

This, said Cr Spinley, meant pledging another Council. He could not agree to that, but hoped that before the end of the present term some

money would., foe available fior improving the. supply pipes .to Hairini Road. Cr Montefiore remarked that the present ie line was quite inadequate for present . requirements, and the sooner improvements were carried out the better. At his home he had frequently turned on the water tap at 4.30 a.m., and there was no more than the merest trickle of ; water.
