A MUMMY STORY.
Many people are very superstitious about mummies generally, yjites Bifinca Paget in the Empire Review, and firmly believe that the spirits of the ancient Egyptians in the Museum shall haunt the place where their bodies are deposited. One old lady, some years ago used to visit the mummy room at the British Museum to ask certain questions of a certain mummy exhibited there. It was her practice to walk ,'thre'e times round the case in which it was kept, and put a question. To the attendant on duty she declared' that the mummy replied by turning slightly to the right or left as an answer in the affirmative or negative. When this extraordinary phenomenon was inquired into it turned out to be quite easily accounted for. There was a loose board near the case, and when anyone walked over it. it shook the case, and also the mummy, the body moving ever so slightly, either to the right or left.
