INDECENT EXPOSURE.
TWELVE MONTHS’ GAOL
(By Telegraph. Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, Wednesday.
Twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labour was the sentence passed on George Dawson Barrett (Mr Cocker) at the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon. A jury found him guilty on a charge of committing an act of indecent exposure to a female child aged five years at Papakura on September 26th. When the case was heard last week the jury disagreed, and a re-hearing was ordered. Before Mr Justice Herdman passed sentence, Mr Cocker made a plea for leniency, on the ground that the child had not been injured in any way. “Prisoner, it is difficult to see how the jury could have done anything else than to find as they have done,” said his Honor. “You have behaved to this little girl in a manner that is repugnant and disgusting. Men who behave like beasts in this disgusting manner must be punished.” After recounting prisoner’s previous convictions, his Honor imposed the term already stated.
