PAEROA, Wednesday,
A daring burglary was committed in the Paeroa branch of the Farmers’ Union Trading Company early this morning. Entry to the premises was gained by smashing the glass panel of a door in the hardware department. Two charges of gelignite were used on one safe without success, the door remaining intact, only the lock and door of the safe being damaged. Kapoc mattresses taken from the drapery department were used to muffle the sound. The burglar is believed to be a new hand, as the fuse used was apparently made of tow. Mr David Brown, manager of the branch, heard the second explosion from his residence in Williams Street. He hurried to the stores. When some distance away he observed a nan on the doorstep of the shop. Brown spoke to him, but got no reply. The man walked away. Brown opened the door in the drapery department and found the room full of smoke from the gelignite explosion. The suspect was kept in view while neighbours went for the police. As a result a man, giving the name of George Smith, alias Scothern, believed to be a farmer at Katikati, near Waihi, has been arrested and will be brought before the Court this afternoon. Only tobacco is missing. Detective Sweeney h?.s a”rived from Hamilton to investigate
