THE WAIKATO HOSPITAL.
AN EXCELLENT TRAINING FIELD. The fact that there are 70 names on the probationers list awaiting an opportunity to train as nurses recently afforded Mr Wallace, chairman of the | Auckland Hospital Board, some satisfaction in his remarks at a meeting of his Board, especially in view of the fact that in Dunedin some difficulty is found in getting nurses at all. Comparing the size of the Auckland hospital with the Waikato hospital, however, the Auckland waiting list sinks almost into insignificance. The Auckland institution contains t 524 beds, and the one at Hamilton 266 beds, the total number of patients treated at the former institution last year being 6091, against 3246 at Hamilton. The Auckland expenditure was £157,000. The amount expended at Hamilton being £69,000; while the number of nurses in training in Uhe city hospital is 182 against 84 at Hamilton. Despite the fact that the Auckland hospital is just about double the size of the Waikato one, the waiting list at Hamilton contains just 100 names, and while this varies a little from time to time, the number seldom drops below 90. The Waikato hospital has, in fact, W" a splendid name in the profession as - a training ground, the examination returns telling their own story. One reason for this is that the nurses are able to gain experience in all the branches of their profession, including training in the theatre, each probationer taking a regular turn of a week on theatre duty periodically during her term. That the demand for admission to the Waikato staff is widespread may be gathered from the fact that the applicants hail from all parte of the Dominion, from the islands, and from Australia
