THE WAIKINO TRAGEDY.

HIGGINS "POSSESSED OP THE DEVIL." (By Telegraph. Press Association.) WAIHI, This Day. The funeral of the children McLean \and Stewart took place on Sunday, ■ some hundreds of people following T the hearse. The girl McGarry is out of danger, and a slight improvement is reported in the other cases. It is said that the boy McLean put up his hands and appealed to Higgins by name not to shoot him. The boy was well-known to the murderer, as their families are neighbours. • Shaw was climbing out of a window when a bullet struck hie fingers, and caused him to fall back. He hid under the desks, and escaped while Higgins was firing from another room. Higgins professes that he had no particular resentment against the i Education Board or the headmaster. He alleges that he had lost 9 horses, and attributed the theft to the settlers. The devil entered him after he .shot the headmaster, but he asserts th\at he never fired at any girl. /Higgins has a .wife and two boys, aged 16 and 6 years. The former left school last year, and the latter does not go to school. He married his wife in Canada just before leaving for New Zealand, and during sixteen . years she has been in Waikino only half a dozen times.
