“ONE EMPTY SHELL." Coming to the Empire Theatre on Tuesday is "One Empty Shell,” a vivid tale of circus life and the West. The story concerns an old clown, commonly known as “Old Bill,” who is left behind when the circus moves to another town, owing to ill-health. Left with him is little Pom Pom, the youngest of the troupe. Old Bill endeavours to earn a living for himself and the child, and is just congratulating himself when he is arrested for murder. How it all ends is told in one of the tensest scenes ever filmed.
“THE WOMAN IN CHAINS.’ Probably the biggest picture which has appeared at the Empire Theatre in many moons, comes with the announcement of the showing of “The Woman in Chains,” on Wednesday. This picture is very large, from the standpoint of the number of people used in its production, over SOO having been used during the course of its construction. Of course. this number do not all appear in one scene. The story of the play is a travelling one. and much time elapses. and because of this, the producers of the picture were forced to hire additional people, though the scene was taken ,on the same set. The principal scene where a large number of people were us d in the picture is the one depicting the Flower Day Coronation on the Isle of Martinique. In this set over 400 people appear, dressed in holiday raiment, while the Queen of the Carnival selects a King from the multitude and crowns him King of Flower Day. The next scene where a large number of people are used is in the Paris cafe. At one setting, 150 people were used, due to the fact that the second scene takes place some time later. With a total of something like 750 extras and a large number of principals used, it is easily estimated that over SOO people take part in this production.
