MUNICIPAL ACCOUNTS.
AX INTERESTING PAPER READ AT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. A new departure in the conduct of business at the meetings of the local Chamber of Commerce was instituted on Tuesday evening, when Mr G. 0. Jourdain read an interesting paper, entitled "Municipal Accounts." Mr Jourdain said that ?. somewhat similar paper had lately been read to a southern Chamber by a qualified accountant of high standing. He felt that the facts clearly set out would be of interest to local members; hence his action in nrenaring the address. He dealt interestingly with the preparation of balance sheets "of. local bodies that had availed themselves of the legislation empowering them to embark, upon trading enterprises, and advor-ated the preparation of commercial balance sheets for these de- .J partments instead of merely cash (;,i statements. as obtained in some towns, Such cash statements could convey a very erroneous impression, and he quoted instances. The address was listened to intently, after which Mr Jourdain was accorded p. hearty vote of thanks (by acclamation) for "•is effort.
