AN OUTBREAK OF FIRE.
QUELLED BY CONSTABLE. Just before midnight on Saturday Constable Doyle noticed an unusual volume of smoke coming from the vicinity of the Te Awamutu Hotel, and hurrying to the scene discovered that it was coming out .of the hotel. Failing to get in by the front door, he rushed round and got in by the rear entrance, and was immediately enveloped in the smoke. Fighting his way through to the office he located the seat of the trouble —the chimney and mantelpiece were ablaze. By this time some of the occupants of the hotel were aroused. The constable soon quenchea the fire with buckets of water. It appears that a draught screen had been placed in the fireplace as a safety precaution when the owner retired.to rest, hut the draught created caused the fire to blaze up afresh and this set alight to the chimney and to the mantel, which was blazing merrily when the constable fortunately arrived on the scene. A few minutes more, and Te Awamutu folk would have witnessed one of the biggest fires in the history of the town.
