ALLEGED CONSPIRACY.

PUBLIC VICTIMISED. BOXER AND TRAINER CHARGED. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Charged with assisting in the management of a lottery known as the “Golden Casket Consultation,” on the Grand National Steeplechase, run at Christchurch on August 14, 1923, a well known professional boxer of Auckland, Stewart Smith, and a trainer with whom he has been associated, Charles Monier, appeared in the Police Court this morning and were remanded till September 13. “As far as can be ascertained there has been a conspiracy between the two accused to take down the public for some hundreds of pounds, said Senior Detective Cummings. “They have distributed books throughout New Zealand. It is understood that one of them had booked to leave for Australia to-morrow—of course, taking the money with him. I would ask that bail be fixed at a substantial figure if it is allowed.” Mr Blakey, who urged Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M., to allow bail, pointed out that the accused were not charged with conspiring. Smith was well known in Auckland and would not be likely to leave. His Worship regarded the matter as serious, and fixed bail at £3OO in the case of each accused. This was immediately forthcoming in the case of Smith.
