MAN CAUGHT IN THE ACT. AUCKLAND, Monday. Yesterday morning Detective McHugh proceeded to Onehunga, where he waited on the wharf till members of the crew of the Northern Steamship Company’s Rarawa began to come ashore. When Joseph Richard McKeown. one of the crew, came down the gangway, the detective accosted him, making a search of his clothes and belongings. The search brought to light a bottle of vinegar, some sugar and some butter. In the Police Court to-day, McKeown pleaded guilty to the theft of the goods, which v/ere valued at 3s. Senior-Detective Cummings said it was not necessary for accused to steal, since he held a good position, with steady work, and when searched he had £l6 11s 9d in his possession. , .. A fine of £lO was imposed with the option of one month at hard labour.
