WORK OF THE MONTH.
OTOROHANGA COUNTY COUNCIL. ENGINEER'S PROGRESS REPORT. At the meeting of the Otorohanga County Council yesterday the engineer, Mr E. R. Gould, reported on the progress of works in the several ridings as follows: Te Rau-a-Moa Riding: About 7i chains of metalling has been completed on West's road, but it is doubtful if any further metalling will be done this season. The decking on a small bridge on the Kawhia-Pirongia road has been repaired since last, meeting. Wharepapa Riding: Owing to the wet weather setting in very 'little metalling has been carried out since last meeting, on the Te Kawa-Nga-l'onm road. The total distance metalled this summer is 3J miles approximately, leaving about li miles yet to be done to complete present contracts. On the Mangaorongo to Kawa road 13 chains have been metalled, leaving S 7 chains yet to do. On the Otorohanga to Kihikihi road, beyond flie old Waitomo boundary, about :U chains of new metal has been laid. It was intended to lay a- distance of 10 chains on this part of the road, but the wet weather setting in will probably prevent this being done until next summer. The unmetalled portion of this road is a distance of otie mile 55 chains. Before this can be completed it will be necessary for j the Council to raise a further loan of I £SOO. • ' I
Honikiwi Riding: Since last meeting the Oamaru road has been graded up and a number of concrete pipes for culverting have been carted out. The most urgent work in this Riding and on which the funds available should be concentrated, are repairs to the existing metalled roads. The main honikiwi road is in the worst state of repair, but the others all require attention. 1 will endeavour, as far as the finances will allow, to have repairs effected.
Mangaorongo Riding: The ordinary maintenance and repair work has been carried out in this riding. The Otorohan.ua to Kihikihi road for a distance of about three miles from Otorohanga road is badly in need of repair and the work will be commenced forthwith. Waipa Riding: In this riding the grader outfit lias been working on Ihe Otorohanga-Te Kuiti, Puketawai, and Tahaia roads. Barber's road lias also been repaired. On the Te Kuiti road the metal has cut through, in places, aggravated by the continuous wet weather. Necessary repairs are now being effected.
