POLITICAL FAVOURS.

A BAY OF ISLANDS CASE. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) RUSSELL. Monday. Much indignation is manifested in the Bay of Islands in consequence of the Government having failed to reappoint Messrs C. Nisbel and J. McAtiley as members of the Bay of Islands Harbour Board. It is stated that these two members had since the Board was constituted about two years ago given most valuable assistance in the more important work of the Board, and their re-appointment was anticipated its a matter of course. Mr Nisbel is a member of the County Council, with large interests in the timber trade, and Mr McAuley is a leading farmer and ex-president of the Farmers' Union. Both men are directors of the Farmers' Freezing Company, which has large freezing works at Moerewa, the works being the primary cause of the formation of the Harbour Board, since shipping accommodation for meat liners had to be provided at Opua. Immediately information was received of the new appointments, the Kaikohe Town Board and the Kaikohe Mataraua Ratepayers' Association telegraphed strong protests to the Minister of Marine. The western and inland portion of the county is now deprived of all representation on the Harbour Board, since at the recent election the coastal "ticket" was elected, and the new Government members are also coastal residents. AVELLINGTON, Monday. The Government nominees for the Bay of Islands Harbour Board were Messrs Enoch Doel (Kawakawa) and Mr John R. Morris (Opua). An effort will be made to secure from the Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister of Marine, an explanation as to why the former Government representatives were overlooked.
