RE TE AWAMUTU-ARAPUNI CONNECTION.
(To the Editor.) Sir.—The letter by Mr J. D. Holmes of 17th inst is quite a reasonable statement of the position. When writing re the Arapuni connection with Te Awamtuu. 1 was unaware that my letter would appear in print and consequently did not quote fully the figures given by Mr Holmes, nor did I offer any criticism of the railway pro posal, as such, put forward by him. In your columns it has been suggested that I should give an address on this subject. While anxious to help where possible, I am disposed to view cynically anything of that nature. I am a layman on road propositions and a knowledge of that fact would discount my views with any audience that could he gathered, and as a road to Arapuni via Pukeatua already exists which is metaiied for two-
thirds of its length, county ratepayers would scarcely view with favour proposals involving heavy loan commitments. Nevertheless, some settlers on the west (Te Awamutu) side of the Waikato river already have their hank accounts at Matamata (with receiving office at Putaruru) and improved roads east of Arapuni will tend to draw more trade from Te Awamutu towards railway centres on that side. I am. etc., FRED. C. DANIELL.
