ASSAULT ON A WOMAN.

MAN FINED £lO. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Wednesday. In the Police Court Henry Reginald Herbert Ashcroft (Mr Singer, associated with Mr Schramm) was lined £lO for having assaulted Miss Elsie May Morgan, of Mount Eden Road. Mr Moody represented complainant. It was shown that accused and complainant had lived together for three years. They had occasional differences, which came to a head when accused left complainant about a fortnight ago. He returned a couple of days later, early in the morning, going into complainant’s bedroom, where some trouble occurred in connection with her handbag, which contained a ring that Ashforth wished to obtain. Eventually excited words' passed on to physical violence, complainant being knocked down. T{ie landlord (a man named Chilcoit), ' who lived on the premises, found Ashforth sitting on complainant in the passage, and thereupon fired him out of the front door. Accused denied the assault, and alleged that Ckilcott had engineered the whole affair, and had brougnl the proceedings to suit his own ends. Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M., said he could not believe that there had been any conspiracy. Such an assault could only be viewed seriously. Ashforth would be fined £lO, out. of which £3 would be paid to Miss Morgan, who had been severely bruised, lie would also pay expenses, £3 3s.
