The “greasy pig race’’ at a sports gathering usually provides a good deal of amusement, states the Kawhia Settler, but the event had an unexpected termination at Kinohaku sports last week. The quarry was /unmistakably of the bush variety, and therefore skilled in hill climbing. Having been on short rations for a day or so previously, and well groomed for the occasion with’ some new brand of lubricator, the animal, when liberated, immediately headed for the bush. Ascending the steep hill at the rear of the sports ground it easily out-distanced the duly qualified and athletic competitors who were in hot pursuit. All went well in the chase until the fugitive, half way to the summit, bowled into the inevitable canine, which had been watching proceedings from “afar off.” and possibly dodging an interview with the dog tax collector, who was much in evidence. However. the porker—or Cook-er—called a sudden halt, glared at the dog, and was about to beat a hasty retreat when it was attacked from the rear. The dog disappeared up the hill, and the Cook-er and its new owner started downhill for home, turning numerous somersaults en route. Having now no use for his trophy, the winner accepted a modest dollar from a visitor in exchange, but while the “deal" was on the Cook-er made another bid for freedom, and was last seen heading for Te Anga, with the rising generation from miles around in ‘ full cry.” The chap who parted with the dollar says it was “bad business” on liis part.
