Gould) reported as follows : Wharepapa Riding: Since last meet- , ing lenders were received for two metalling contracts on the Te Kawa-Xga-roma road, and the lowest in each case was accepted, viz., .M. Morton. ; £I2S9 lis St\. L'or contract Xo. •(. and Messrs Petersen and Disher. £1147 10s 9d for contract Xo. f>. lioth contractors have commenced work, and a few chains have already been laid. Authority has been received for forming and metalling on the Mangaorongo to | Te Kawa road subject lo specilica- | tions being amended as directed by : the Public Works Department. Authi ority has also been received for a few j chains of metalling on the Otorohanga to Kihikihi road. This will include ,' six chains on the south end and 14 chains near the Tokanui quarry. |{oi pair work has been carried out on the Waipari. Aotearoa and other roads in I ; the rifling when l necessary. Te Rau-a-Moa Riding: The work j done in. this riding was the usual re-j pair work, chiefly on the Pirongia lo j '' Kawhia road. On the road several ! culverts on the metalled portion require to be renewed, and the work D ■ in hand. Honikiwi Riding: The matter- of doing certain repair work in this riding on the Honikiwi road was comhienced. but owing chiefly to the weather conditions being unsuitable for : the particular work proposed it was. temporarily abandoned and the grader and plant put on to more profit-j able work. However. I hope in the course of a day or two, when the work" on which the plant is engaged is completed, to get the grader back and j • complete the work originally propos- l ed. The gorse overhanging the bat- j ters on the Pirongia road is being < cut, the owners of the adjoining properties being charged with the cost, j Waipa Riding: Since last meeting a j commencement has been made with the completion of the formation on I the Tahaia soldier settlers' access I road. About 7a chains of new forma- I tion 20 feel wide is to be made. The j j foreman is in charge of the work" j with tractor and r grader. and is male- ! i ing a good job. The work is being i carried out much cheaper than would Ibe done by the ordinary hand meI thods. Repairs have been effected on J Puketawai, Tahaia and other roads. . The wash out on the Ofewa road due I to river erosion has also been repaired. This work was cheaply done and

I think will prove effective against further erosion. T hope in the course of a week or so to get the grader on to cleaning out the water tables, etc.. on the Otorohanga-Hangatiki road.

and also to grade tip the lower end of the Puketawai road. Unfortunatefly the continuous wet weather has prevented much grader work being done this summer, .and consequently this class of work is behind. Mangaorongo Riding: Since last meeting T have prepared specifications for 11.7 chains of metalling on the Waipa river road, and 96 chains on the Mangaorongo valley road. These have been sent to the Public "Works Department for approval, but the work cannot proceed until the loan money is available.
