UNPROFITABLE SHIPMENTS.
Sir.—l see an article in your isssue of the 26th oh the above subject—27 prime beasts killed and sent to Birmingham and were sold for £269 14s, the whole of which, and an additional £ll 14s 4d, was eaten up in expenses, £lO 8s 6d for each beast. It would be very interesting to,a good many of your readers if you could get and publish the particulars, items, of how this amount was made up. It is evident there must be a reduction in the charges in every branch of the business, or there will soon be no graziers or exporters of beef or mutton left, to help to pay interest on national expenses. I heard "of a line of 600 wethers that were sent Home a short time since, that only gave a net return of 6d per head. Thanking" you in anticipation, I am, etc., B. BUDDEN. Honikiwi.. (The figures were taken from the official accounts supplied by the exporting company, and the charges covered all items for freezing, shipping and marketing.—Ed.)
