THE RABBIT PEST.
APATHETIC RATEPAYERS OF HAIRIN’I. NEW POLICY TO BE ADOPTED. The monthly meeting of the Hairini Rabbit Board was held at the Farmers’ Institute on Saturday, when there were present: Messrs H. Mandeno (chairman), H. V. Collison, G. Hall, and G. B. Melrose. Rabbiters’ reports were read, and the inspector reported on the work done. Future work for the rabbiters was laid out by the Board.
The financial position f was placed before the meeting, showing the state of rates paid to date. The Board decided that action should be taken to collect last year’s unpaid rates.
The question of the future policy of the Board was discussed. In view of the small amount of assistance rendered by some farmers to the rabbitters employed by the Board, to the failure of many ratepayers to do personally any work of rabbit destruction, and the failure to assist the Board by removing cover which acted as a breeding place, 'it was suggested that the Board consider the advisability of striking a smaller rate and insist on the ratepayers doing the work of destruction themselves. The matter will be further considered at next meeting. Now that the Board had reduced the rabbit pest it was greatly regretted that the ratepayers had become so apathetic as to render the Board little or no assistance..
