MANCHESTER MARKET.
FOR NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE.
BUTTER AND CHEESE IN DEMAND,
■That there is a big market yet to be developed in the west of England for primary iproducts from iNew Zealand is the view held by Mr W. E. Lewisham, partner in tlhe well known Auckland 'firm of 'Messrs Robertson Bros., Ltd., who returned Iby the 'Niagara after an absence Of six 'months. His visit Home was in connection wi>th the scheme already initiated tor apening direct trade between Manchester via the Ship Canal and New Zealand.
"The (Manchester people ican, and are prepared to advance on shipments of our produce up to practically any amount," said Mr Lewisham to an Auckland interviewer. "This 'means opening a neiw market amidst a large population. Trial shipments of New Zealand Ibutter sent to Manchester direct sold well. From Manchester a population Of about half that of England can be opened to 'New Zealand produce. I aim satisfied'that our ibutter willl sell wel'l provided it is sol'd as iNew Zealand make and not mixed with other manufactures. ■ The Trafford Park people are putting our (butter on the market under its own name. The butter is ibeimg put up in pound pats at the 'cooll stores. Each pat has on it the following -label, ''N.Z. first 1 - grade 'butter, imported to Manchester, and packed in Trafford Park -cool stores.' The prejudice against pats has broken down. This is the first time that has been done in England, but has heen the practice in the cool stores in Vancouver for some years past. " There is an equally big opening for 'New Zealand cheese," -concluded Mr Lewisham. " One centre in the Midlands wants icoUoured, while an adjacent one requires only white cheese. The Midlands could absorb all the cheese iNew Zealand ©an make. Hitherto New Zealand cheese came bo the Midlands through London, which meant the added cost of rail from that centre."
