OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM.
SQUARE PEGS IN ROUND HOLES
After some 12 years of agitation a commencement, has been made with the scheme for the erection of a large school at Wellington on the site of the Terrace Gaol. A small instalment of the scheme has been completed in the shape of an infant school erected at a cost of £11,299, which was' formally opened by the Minister of Education. In the course of his remarks Mr Parr said there were still some defects in our educational sysr tell, but he was doing hi& best to remedy them. One was that so many children did not receive even an elementary education, for four out of six did not receive the full benefit of the system. They had been making the mistake in handling children of trying to fit square pegs into round holes. If he could only take hold of the children at 12 years* of age and put them in channels l specially suitable for them, those they considered dull and backward would go further than the ones who were considered the brightest and cleverest. Instead of keeping them at it till they were 14 years, he would take advantage of his* powers and retain them for another year, with continuation classes until they were 18 years.
