THE FESCUE HARVEST.
KNOCKS EVERYTHING ELSE OUT
A Southland visitor (to .Christchurch furnished a Pres-s reporter with some remarkable figures -of the results of the fescue harvest in Riverdale district near Gore. From an area of less -than 20 .square miles it is estimated tha-t from £IOO,OOO to £120,000 came to growers through this crop. In one case, of which the visitor h-ad first-hand knowledge, two young fellows, returned soldiers, secured approximately £3500. They took over a farm, did no work on it until harvesting of fescue commenced, and in a few weeks their cheque was as stated. They were fortunate in securing the good price o-f Is 3d per lb, and a good crop of about eight bags t-o the acre. In another case a family holding several large farms secured from £13,000 to £ISOOO, ’the price generally in their case being a s-hade lower than Is 3d per lb. The price this season, generally from Is -to Is 3d per lb., is much higher than usual, but, las the S-outb-lander remarked, “It knocks everything else out.”
