NEW ZEALAND-MADE FILM.
OPERATIONS AT NELSON.
Among the passengers who arrived at Wellington from 'San Francisco 'by the Tahiti were Messrs Fred Bentley and Fred Frank, well-known American cinema photographers, who are, on their way to Nelson to take film pictures of a feature production in which Miss Annette Kellerman is to play the leading role. The picture, as in the case of other films in which Miss Kellerman has figured, will introduce several swimming and under-water scenes. Some of these will be performed in the clear water of the Nelcrm rPQPrvnir
'lnformation regarding the film was given by Mr J. R. Sullivan in an address before the Nelson 'Chamber of Commerce recently. After detailing his experiences in New Zealand in his travels with the object of 'choosing a locale for the submarine picture, 'Mr Sullivan said he went to Nelson, and w'as greatly impressed with the climate. After the local support that had been given him it decided him to commence operations there. He was satisfied that a picture could be made in Nelson for £3OOO 'less than anywhere else. With the climate and assistance already offered, he was satisfied that | he could turn out a 'good picture. ! For the submarine scenes special apparatus is being obtained from Am- j erica, and some of these scenes will be taken at Takaka, where preparations are already in progress. Two sailing ships and steamers will be required, and also a liner for some of the scenes. Mr Sullivan indicates that on the result of the picture may depend the setting up of permanent studios in Nelson, as pictures can be produced there more cheaply than in England, on account of the better climatic conditions, which are an important factor.
