LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The area under the jurisdiction of the Te Awamutu Electric 'Power Board is 260 square miles. The trial of Bishop Liston, on a charge of alleged seditious utterance, will take place in the Supreme Court, Auckland, on Monday next. ‘Mr Justice Stringer will preside. The wedding took place at All Saints" Church Palmerston North, of Miss Florence May Orbell, sister of Mr Stanley Orbell, of Te Awamutu, to Captain 'Cranworth F. Jackson, Regiment and late of the 4th and Bth South African contingents.

An Auckland telegram states that the Arbitration Court awarded Ena Rooke £225 in respect of her claim to recover from G. T. Niccoll and others compensation for the loss of her son, who was a seaman aboard the Lyman D. Foster, lost in 1919. The Court was of opinion that the son was a source of considerable support to his mother.

Speaking in favour of the erection of county offices in Te Awamutu, the chairman (Mr D. S. Reid) stated at Monday’s meeting of the Waipa County Council that they must have offices for their staff. With the enlargement of the county it had been necessary to appoint an assistant clerk and an engineer’s cadet, and they should have proper office convenience and comfort. While he did not favour an elaborate building outside, internally they wanted thoroughly up-to-date offices. He thought they could get good competition in Te Awamutu, and should be able to put up a. suitable building for £IOOO. Mr Reid added that this year’s revenue in rates would possibly be £30,000. Cr Peacock said he would be loth to take the cost out of rates, and favoured a loan. Cr Ellicott agreed. At present they had money o.ut, and even when they got it in some ratepayers would be 'behind, as they could not pay two years’ rates at once. As recorded on Tuesday, the Council agreed to obtain an option over the site, which is opposite the Town Hall and runs from Roche Street to Bank Street.
