TE AWAMUTU BOROUGH.

FO KTNI G lITLl r ME ETIN G.

SUMMARY OF BUSINESS.

The fortnightly meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council ,vas held last night . His Worship the Mayor (Mr L. G. Armstrong) presided, and there were also present: J. G Wynyard, J. Oliphant, O. Bygravp, C. O. Dowries, P. W. Peate, G. Spiuley and S. Clark. Leave of absence was granted Cr. W Jeffery. The borough lore man (Mr I. Owsdey) was in attendance. The Director General of Health corrected an omission in the Municipal Corporations Act. 1920. The full act gave power to boroughs to make grants to district and Plunket nurses. —Received.

The Medical Officer of Health forwarded a regulation gazetted enforcing the collection of ashes, sweepings, dust, rubbish, bones, waste food, refuse, etc., in a metal receptacle at every house with a tVght fitting lid to prevent ingress of flies, rain, or vermin. Breaches of the regulation would be penalised by a fine not exceeding £s.—Received. The secretary of the Otago Hospital Board wrote protesting against the increased charge for audit, now £3 3s per day, or 9s per hour, as against £2 2s per day previously, or, 6s 8d per hour, a sufficiently high charge, i The Mayor said that much time in the audit was saved by keeping books properly and up to da-e. He thought the matter beyond the jurisdiction of the Council.

Cr Downed thought the charge of £3 3s reasonable.

The letter was received. The clerk of the Waipa County Council (Mr Chas. Bowden) wrote asking the Council to appoint two delegates to attend a conference to discuss dealing with heavy motor traffic, at Hamilton on 28th inst.— Crs. Spinley and Peate were appointed the Council's delegates.

The Mayor siaid that the difficulty was not so much in ascertaining a fair sum to charge per vehicle, but in distributing k amongst the various local bodies. A mile of borough road would sustain equai damage and the cost of repairs equal to that of miles of county roads. Cr Oliphant: Ten miles.

.Half a dozen tenders for the sewage quarters near the saleyards were received, and that of Mr S. Tunnicliff was accepted. Mr Tunnicliffe tendered 25s a week for the first month of his tenancy of the sewage quarters, with use of all .cooking utensils, same to be replaced on expiry of lease, and after the place had been got clean and fit for business, 30s a week.

The question of stipulating preference for borough workmen was raised by Cr. Clark, but the general opinion was that borough men of good character would have no difficulty in obtaining quarters there. Tenders for the occupancy .of the old mart were received, and that oi the Power Board at 15s a week was accepted. The offer of Mrs E. M. Rennie (Kio Kio) for the lease of the library buildings for a shop at 30s a week was accepted, upon conditions that certain repairs, of which she would undertake part, were carried out.

Messrs Toogood, Jonesi, and Holmes reported on the sewerage progress. A start had been made tunnelling under Alexandra Street and the works were ready to start on No. 30 sewer in the main street. —The report was adopted. The Works Committee recommended: (1) That if Mr Walters would pipe to his boundary, the Council would undertake to replace the 6 inch pipes with 9 inch pipes; (2) provided Mr Walters clears the blackberry, the Council to continue the drain so as to pick up the centre row of pipes.—The report was adopted.
