WAIRARAPA MEETING OPENED.

GREYTOWN, This Day.

The rifle championship meeting was opened this morning at Parawai, with an entry of nearly 270 marks'men. The weather is dull, with the wind steady from the left.

In the first event, the Bidwill (Match, ten shots, at 300 and 500 yards, some good average scores are being made by the men down early, one off the possible being quickly on the board. Shooting in the 300 yards of the Bidwill Match is still in progress. The best scores at 11 a.m. 'were: Ching (Karori), Piper (Christchurch), Hunt (Wellington), Marenzi (Tararua), Guy (Kaponga), all 49; Mayhew (Linton), West (Blenheim), 48. Scores of 47 and 46 'are fairly frequent. The shooting is described as easy, but a drizzling rain is setting in.
