RAILWAY LOSSES.
£4OOO A DAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELINGTON, Wednesday. The Acting-Minister of Railways declared in the Hovse yesterday that the daily 'loss on railways is £4OOO, and there is no prospect of making a reduction on freights and fares. This course had been suggested by Mr G. W. Witty, who considered it was warranted on account of reductions in overseas l freights, and in the cost of living. He also thought the traffic might thereby be stimulated. The Hon. D. H. Guthrie's reply to the last suggestion was that it did not coincide w.'th the Department's experience. The position was serious 1 , and although freights and fares were under consideration he did not see how they could possibly be reduced.
