WATERSIDE THEFTS.

MAGISTRATE'S STRONG REMARKS 'By Telegraph. Press Association. WESTPORT, Friday. In sentencing a waterside worker named Hale to three months 1 ' hard labour to-day, Mr Maunsell, S.M., said it was a notorious fact that thefts'were on all waterfronts in the Dominion. In making this statement he did not wish to cast a reflection on : all waterside workers, the majority of whom, he believed, were honest citizens. "One thief makes a lot of trouble," he added. He could not understand unions admitting such men. He would like authority to prohibit Hale from working on the wharf. H.'s membership was detrimental to the union.
