LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Bay of Plenty Jockey Club races, to have been held at Te Aroha to-day, were postponed until Monday on account of rain. Two additional circuits in the electric power reticulation scheme came into use yesterday, when power was switched on over the Puniu road and Te Rahu road circuits.
The attendance at the primary department of the local State school has much improved. The roll number is 311, and the average last week was 287. If this attendance can be kept up until the end of the year the Education Board's proposed reduction of the teaching staff will not take effect. The Mayor (Mr L. G. Armstrong) is visiting Wellington for the purpose of conferring with several Government departments in furtherance of matters which have recently engaged the attention of the Te Awamutu Borough Council.
We are indebted to Father Edge for the interesting information that among pupils who secured proficiency certificates this month was one aged 11 years and 5 months at the end of the present month. The ( youthful prodigy is Master Eric Mahoney, son of Constable Mahoney, cf I'ihikihi, and he was educated at the Catholic school. Two minor accidents occurred recently to workers of the Te Awamutu Power Board. On Thursday Mr T. Lee was up a pole when the bell against which he was leaning somehow became detached, and he fell, slightly injuring his shoulder bone. Yesterday an insulator burst in Mr T. Minchin's hands, severely cutting his fingers. Neither injury is seriou .
A boy's ball which went over the fence was followed by the father of the boy against the wishes of the lady next door, who objected to damage to her garden. The sequel was a tussle, and in the Supreme Court at Auckland decision was given for plaintiff (Mrs Louisa Beuth) for £l9 9s special damages and £3 5s general damages, with costs. The defendant (Hubert Buckly) alleged that the woma had a fit, hut the magistrate preferred to believe the medical evidence. The following cable has been received by the Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company, from their London office, under date of December 6th, 1921: Beef: Owing to heavy supplies of old stock and restricted buying trade is dull, and the outlook is very unfavourable for some months. Recent values at Smithfield are: New Zealand hinds 3s 4d to 3s lOd; fores 2s 8d to 2s 10i|d. In March next year we expect values to range from 3si 4d to 4s 8d according to condition and cut.
Among the local Jersey successes at the recent Auckland show was Mr P. J. Doyle's fine cow Magpie, which secured first in grade cow class. Mr F. J. B. Ryburn'rf' bull took first prize in the three-year-old class, and a third prize in two-year-old heifers in milk with "Netley's Maid," and a second and third prize in the yearling heifer class. Mr C Parker, of Hairini, secured a highly-commended. This was a big class and some splendid stock was exhibited, great interest being taken by the public in the judging. Mr G. L. Stead's dwelling, training stables, and seven acres of land were offered at auction to-day by Messrs Dalgety and Co. in conjunction with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. The property as a whole was offered first, but there were two bids only—of £SOOO and £5500, and the property was withdrawn. Offered separately, the homestead and 2 acres 2 roods failed to draw a bid, and although the auctioneer descended invitingly to a suggested £6OO for the stables and 2 acres 2 roods of land, there were no bids forthcoming.
