ASIATIC IMMIGRANTS.
RUMOURED INCREASE DENIED.
Mr Poland, M.P. for Ohinemuri, asked in the House of Representatives whether any, and if so what, steps are being taken to combat the increasing influx of Chinese and other Asiatics into this country, and more particularly their introduction into the skilled trades of the Dominion? The Hon. Mr Downie Stewart (Minister of Customs) replied: It is incorrect to premise that ,there is an increasing influx of Chinese and Asiatics. In fact, that has been rendered impossible by the Act of 1920. The number of Chinese and Hindus who entered New Zealand during 1920 wasc Chinese, 1,029; Hindus, as nearly as can be ascercained, 220. Foi eight months of 1921, during which time the new Act has been in operation, the numbers were: Chinese, 28, Hindus, 84. The majority of these Hindus were passengers by the "Ganges" to Suva, en route to New Zealand when the new Act came into force, and accordingly they could not be prevented from landing.
