STARVING THE HOSPITAL.
UNPAID LEYIES. PUBLIC BODIES REBUKED. The secretary reported at the Waikato Hospital Board’s last meeting that the levies from the various contributing bodies were coming to hand very slowly, and this was having the effect of keeping the Board’s finances down to a very low ebb. Mr Conradi said that of a total of twenty-seven contributing bodies in the Board’s district only two had paid the latest levy in full, while, of the remainder, only five had. forwarded a portion of their contribution. In one instance a portion of the preceding year’s levy was also owing. This was placing the Board in a very awkward position financially, and although he had made repeated requests to the local bodies concerned the money was not coming in. If the local bodies paid their dues in quarterly instalments, this, would considerably allieviate the finances of the Board.
While recognising that local bodies, as well as the Board, were feeling the financial stringency, many members considered that hospital clues had a first call. A rate was struck to cover that payment, and it should not be diverted to "other channels of local body administration.
The secretary will make another appeal to the defaulting local bodies, m the endeavour to secure, at any rate, a portion of the money owing to the Board.
