INSANITARY DWELLING.

ACTION AT CHRISTCHURCH.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday.

Steps will be taken by the city ■health authorities at once to deal with insanitary dwellings and general dirt and squalor in some parts of the c:ty, as revealed by the investigations of Mrs A. E l . Herbert. So far, the housing aspect of Mr s Herbert’s revelations has attracted most public notice, but it is now clear that the condition of many houses visited by her brings them well within the scope of the provisions of the Health Act. A large proportion of them are worm-eaten old cottages, quite beyond repair, and fit only for prompt demolition. The larger number of diptheria cases which has been proved to have come from them—there were five from one house—should be enough to show that they are not healthy habitations.
