In a somewhat poetic vein the secretary of the Pirongia' Chamber of Commerce wrotd to the Waipa County Council: “Woodman spare that tree! Touch not a single bough.” He stated he had been asked to write the Te Awamutu Electric Power Board to obtain assurance that there was no truth in the rumours that the fine old trees on the western side of the main road through Pirongia, ' “the most outstanding feature of P.’rongia’s principal street,” were to be cut down' or hacked about in order to facilitate the erection of poles carrying wires for electric current. He asked for the council’s support to protest against any interference with or destruction of such noble old trees. The letter was received without a motion.
