AN UNEMPLOYMENT FUND.
PROPOSED BY SOLDIERS. THE GOVERNMENT’S OPINION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) J - WELLINGTON. This Day. The Dominion council of the Returned Soldiers’ Association recently j&A up a committee to consider the flPestion of unemployed soldiers, when proposals were formulated to create new capital out of the savings / of the people, and to use this to carry on necessary public works, particularly hydro-electic schemes. To this end it was then suggested that measures be taken to increase the sale of post office investment certificates. The committee sent its proposals to the Government, and has now received a reply that the Government cannot see its way to adopt them, and it is not considered possible to compete by means of post office certificates with the present high rates of interest, nor does the Government care about inviting investments which would result in an accumulation payable in one sum at a fixed period. It urges that the post office savings hank is itself the surest, safest, and cheapest mode of investment of public savings. ,
