WATCH THE PENNIES.
A CAUTIOUS COUNCIL.
WAIPA MUST ECONOMISE
In some candid remarks the chairman (Cr. D. S. Reid) of the Waipa County Council at its meeting on Tuesday impressed upon the members the urgent necessity of retrenchment. "There must be the greatest economy," he said, "and every piece •of work which is not absolutely necessary must be cut out, so that in two years' time a clean financial balance sheet can be presented. This advice must apply to all ridings. One riot be in a better position than another. It must be general. The seriousness of the position cannot be overestimated. In the general account there must be very considerable reduction in the amount of rates to be spent. Every item over £lO will have to be sanctioned at this table. We must watch the pennies."
Or. Oavanagh, after enquiring what money was available before the rates would come in, expressed the opinion that the ratepayers should understand that the council's position was indeed a serious one.-
