TOLL GATES.
ESTABLISHMENT URGED.
ROAD EXPENSES INCREASING.
When the question of the striking of a rate was under discussion ,at the meeting of the Waipa County Council yesterday Cr Crawford said that the burden on the farmers was getting too heavy when land and income tax was taken into consideration. It was time that some different method of •providing money was introduced. Taranaki, said the speaker, had, toll gates, and the, result of the scheme enabled that province to have good roads.
Cr Peacocke: Yes, but they have higher rates have. The chairman thought 'the establishment and maintenance of toll gates would he unduly costly. Cr. Crawford: Oh. well, we've got a 'lot to shoulder. The man who uses the road should have to pay for it. It was mentioned that the consent of the Minister of Internal Affairs had to be obtained before toll gates could be established. After the discussion the matter dropped, but Cr Crawford thought still that some new scheme should be introduced <to meet the heavy expenditure on the roads.
