THE AMATEUR STATUS.
SHORT SHRIFT FOR SUMMER. ANGER IN AUCKLAND. A protest is being raised in Auckland in defence of L. L. Kronfeld, the swimmer. It appears that Kronfeld was permitted by the Parnell Club and the Auckland Swimming centre to accept an invitation to give an exhibition swim at the Thames Carnival arid to accept expenses. His expenses amounted" to 29/, including 24/ steamer fare, but he declined to take more than £l. Kronfeld is said to have acted generously at the South Auckland Centre's carnivals at Hamilton by donating his trophies back to the centre. The New Zealand centre, however, without warning declared him a professional for accepting the expenses at Thames. It is held by his defenders that the fault if any, lies with the Auckland Centre and not with Kronfeld, and they hotly assail the New Zealand Council for its impetuous act in condemning a Worthy athlete without trial.
