QUALITY OF DAIRY PRODUCE.

STLIL ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT,

“The quality of our dairy produce has been well maintained this season, as compared with preceding seasons,” remarked an officer of the Agricultural Department to a pressman lately, “although it is well recognised that there is yet considerable room for improvement in a number of brands —both butter and cheese—coming forward for grading.” He added that at the beginning of the season a number of farm dairy instructors were appointed by the Department in co-operation with a number of the dairy factories, an arrangement by which the dairy companies paid the major portion of the officials’ salaries. The work of these farm dairy instructors had, he stated, proved a very potent factor in improving the quality of the milk and cream supplied by the companies with whom they were working. It is difficult to say whether there is direct connection between bowls and rifle shooting (wrote a Nelson correspondent recently), bu(t. J. W. Ching, ex-champion rifle shot of New Zealand, has recently taken on bowls, and has won the champion of champions tournament at Nelson.

Mr James Brackenridge, the oldest bowler in New Zealand, pleaded guilty at a smoke concert at Palmerston North to having played bowls for 57 years. “No wonder you’re so good at it,” interjected an envious' trundler amid laughter.
