WHAREPAPA ROAD BOARD.

MONTHLY,MEETING.

A meeting of the Wharepapa Road Board was held yesterday, when there were present: Messrs. J. B. Teasdale, Jnr„ (chairman), J. T. Young, W. Otd, and J. H. Beard. The chairman, before commencing the business of the meeting, formally welcomed Mr Beard as a new member, and trusted that his association with the Board would be a pleasant one. —Mr Qeard suitably replied. Consent by the Board to the taking over of the road running along the north-eastern portion of Wharepuhunga (9a la) and westward through the property of Mr Orakau Kay was asked by Messrs Cox, Luxford, _ and McCarter on behalf of Mr Lethbridge. —Mr Lethbridge attended the meeting, and explained the position, and it was arranged for members of the Board to inspect the road in question. In accordance with the invitation of the president (Mr C. G. Downes) of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce to a conference of local bodies in connection with the proposed construction of a railway from Kawhia to the Main Trunk line, it was decided that a representative would be in attendance.

The engineer of the Waitomo County Council wrote applying for payment of proportionate cost of forming and metalling the road near the Te Kawa railway station. —It was decided to pay the sum of £lB3 6s 8d in settlement of the claim. Four tenders were received for the metalling with shingle of a portion of Te Ivawa-Wharejjuhunga Road, and that of Mr Townsend (at 13s 9d per cubic yard) was accepted. The engineer (Mr E. R. Gould) reported as follows: The metalling of the Otorohanga-Kihikiki Road is proceeding satisfactorily, and has been completed to its junction with the Mangaorongo Road. The greater portion iof the metal required for the Te Puhi Road has been supplied and carted to the work. Messrs Rennie Bros, have completed their metalling contract on the Te Kawa to Ngaroma Road. Good metal has been supplied, and'•when consolidated will make., a good road. Tenders to complete thb metalling from the end of the present metal near the mental hospital to where the* contract started were invited, and four have been received. Mr W. Thomson has commenced the metalling of Archer’s Hill, and has completed about four chains. The foreman, with a grader team and a party of men, has almost completed the grading and necessary improvements to this road as far as Ngaroma. A good job has been made, and the cost of the work is satisfactory. A party of men has been employed completing necessary repairs and improvements to the Mangawheo Road. Fillings have been widened and raised, drains cut, and a few chains of a soft portion of the road metalled. The party working on t.his road will proceed with the work on Tolley’s Road within a few days. Portions of the Aotearoa Road are in a bad state, and I propose shifting the grader team on to it very shortly, as soon as the roads about the Ngaroma township are completed. I inspected the metalling of a portion of the Ngutunui Road, in the Wharepapa Rtoad Board district, which was metalled by the Waitomo County Council, and to which this Board agreed to contribute. The work appeared to been carried out satisfactorily.—The* report was adopted.
